Suburban Migration

By the late 1950s, the population of suburban Jefferson County was booming as new homes sprouted up with construction of the Watterson Expressway.

But by the tens of thousands, the new suburban dwellers turned to Bunton's Seed -- a name they'd known and trusted for years -- when it came time to plant gardens in those new back yards.

1950s Facts:

  • The Watterson Expressway was not originally envisioned as an Interstate highway. Portions were initially built with sidewalks.
  • Jefferson County's population outside Louisville jumped nearly 100 percent -- to 220,308 during the '50s.
