Artistic
Covers
During the 1950s, Bunton's
Seed produced a series of catalogs with "Norman
Rockwell" style covers.
The company also produced a
long series of highly artistic catalog covers in
the 1970s, '80s and '90s.
About our '54 Cover
Possibly you are wondering about the
unusual and inspiring cover on this 1954 issue --
about the departure from staid designs and
over-used groups of vegetables to a delightful
portrayal of a wistful gardner. Perhaps you, too,
are anxious for the weather and season to let your
dream of a better home and garden become a
reality.
With deep appreciation, we
sincerely thank Artist Paul S. Plaschke of The
Courier-Journal staff for so ably touching the
hearts of all good gardners with his brush and oil
paint. Plaschke is of a family of artists; his
grandfather, Paul A., of The Times "Semaphore"
cartoon fame; his father Emil B., of The Times arts
staff, and his uncle, Harvey Plaschke, of the
Standard Rotogravure staff.
We hope you enjoy the
cover and the complete issue, while doing your
"Fireside Gardening." May we help make your dream
garden come true?

The
1954 catalog featured a map showing the
Bunton's parking lot -- an increasingly
important part of doing business since
more and more people were driving in the
1950s.
The site
of the parking lot is now at a spot
exactly below the Interstate 65 bridge
over Liberty Street. And the
Jefferson-Brook offramp runs above the
building's former location.
