Guarded
Optimism
The Great Depression began in
late 1929, hitting every sector of the economy --
but farmers were especially hard hit. As an
agri-business, Bunton's Seed shared its customers'
financial stress but weathered the Depression
because of sound business practices.
A message in the 1935 catalog
reflected new optimism:
As we issue our Annual
Catalog this year, we feel more confident of the
future. The marked improvement in business in 1934,
particularly agriculture, gives us a brighter
outlook for the coming year. We hope results in
your line are likewise encouraging and that you
will be more prosperous during 1935.
This year we celebrate our
10th Anniversary. Business methods and people may
change over an expanse of 10 years, but our slogan
remains the same "ONLY THE BEST." ...
Each year we make tests and
trials of new and improved varieties of seeds. When
such varieties prove their merit we list and offer
them to our trade -- not before. ...
